About Colegio Mesoamericano
Colegio Mesoamericano is a small school located in Patzicía (a pueblo located approximately 30 minutes west of Chimaltenango). We have about 250 students ranging in age from four to eighteen. Our mission is to promote, support, and establish opportunities where students can study and learn so that they may eventually enter into their chosen careers, or even into the university. Given that few Maya have been able to attend a university for either social or economic reasons, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for us.
The majority of our students are of Mayan descent- many coming from tremendously poor socio-economic backgrounds. This means that a large number of our students can not pay for their education. When this happens, if we donīt have sufficient sponsors, the children are pulled out and put in government schools where there are less opportunities to learn, or they are put in the camps to work.
At Colegio Mesoamericano we offer our students the unique opportunity to learn computers and English from the first year they enter school. Along with
the other education we provide (math, history, social sciences, biology, chemistry, etc.) this gives our students a great advantage. We also offer smaller student-teacher ratio and a caring environment where students are taught morals and character education in a warm, loving, and spiritual environment.
We feel that by providing this education we are better preparing our students to deal with the problems that are so prevalent in Guatemalan society, those of poverty, ignorance, crime, and disease. At the same time our hope is that we are preparing our students to be of service to be the people of Guatemala.
