The majority of our approximately 250 students are of Mayan descent and tremendously poor. This means that a large segment of our student population can not pay for their education. When this happens, if we do not have sufficient sponsors, the children are pulled out of school and put in government schools where there are too many children and not enough teachers; or they are put into the fields to work. Yet one of the most powerful and endearing gifts we can give to a child is that of giving them an education. With this they are then able to be more self determined, confident, able, secure, and helpful to others - including members of their own families.
Some of the problems facing the people of Guatemala are the high cost of goods, the huge unemployment rate, and tremendously low wages when work is ultimately found. For example, a small carton of milk costs Q7 and a box of cornflakes Q25. Parents may make Q32 a day IF they can find work. And so it is not surprising to find that the cost of an education is also out of the reach of many families.
After cutting all possible costs we can we have found that it costs $50 a month to educate a child in Colegio Mesoamericano - Patzicia. The children are in school 10 months, so that comes to $500 a year. Ninety percent of our students are on partial scholarships, and ten percent on full scholarships. This means that we must have sponsors for our children. If you feel you are able to make a difference in the life of even one child, please consider becoming either a full or partial sponsor.
Your donation is tax deductible and 100% is applied to one or more children. We do not use your money for administrative purposes. You will receive periodic reports and pictures of your sponsored child.
